We Tried Every Single Pair of Tights So You Don't Have To—Here Are Our Favorites!

My wardrobe doesn't change that much from season to season, so I'm a huge fan of tights. An accessory that allows us to continue wearing our favorite dresses and skirts through the bitter cold winter? Let's just say I have amassed quite a collection over the years. Tights are frustrating to buy, though. You never know exactly how they are going to look, fit, or feel once you have them on and you can't try them on before committing to the purchase. Not to mention the fact that there is little more frustrating (sartorially speaking, of course) than tights that pinch at the waist or start falling down the moment you move more than an inch. We feel your pain. That's why we have tested close to 150 pairs of tights from sheer to opaque and everything in between, in all colors and fits. Personally, I'm a wool tights girl, through and through. The Wolford Merino Tights in black come with my highest recommendations if that's your style as well! They are warmer than most, opaque with a hint of texture, but not bulky in the slightest. Not to mention the fact that they last forever and don't easily snag

Personally, I'm a wool tights girl, through and through. The Wolford Merino Tights in black come with my highest recommendations if that's your style as well! They are warmer than most, opaque with a hint of texture, but not bulky in the slightest. Not to mention the fact that they last forever and don't easily snag or run (because who wants tights you have to throw out after every wear?). Having pinpointed my favorite early on, I turned to some of my fellow Glamour editors to help me round out the bunch. Here are our blue ribbon winners!

Leah channeled our favorite royal with Spanx' Super-High Shaping Sheers in black. "Sheer tights were a necessary part of my most Kate Middleton outfit, ever. They made the overall effect a little bit more classic-preppy and let freckles on my legs peek through, which I liked. The biggest downside is that they feel more delicate than opaque tights, so I've had to be extra careful around objects all day to avoid potential snags."

Sophia found the best opaques in Commando's Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights in black. "I basically live in black opaques all winter—but all black tights are not created equal. You want even coverage, opaque enough but with enough skin showing through — so you don't end up looking like a plastic mannequin." Sophia says, "These from Commando do just that—and my goodness, the waistband is so comfortable and stays up all day. Two emoji thumbs-up!"

Looking for a little more than basic black, Zoe chose We Love Colors' Solid Color Tights in maroon. "I love these We Love Colors tights!" says Zoe "They are super opaque and the maroon is perfect for adding a pop of color to my usual all-black winter uniform."

Lindy reached for Original Tight-End Tights in Opaque Gray from Spanx, explaining, "The problem I usually have with control-top tights is that they tend to be very uncomfortable. The Spanx tights were soft and silky but still smoothing in all the right places. Plus, I love that they are actually opaque!"

Nikki has been loving fishnets this fall, so she layered DKNY trouser socks over Donna Karan Collection Fishnets in black. "I really love these fishnets because they're so small that they read as sheer tights from far away, which takes the risque feeling out of them and makes them more work appropriate." Nikki added, "Trouser socks were just for a bit of flair because I was inspired by Leah's post yesterday."
